I actually think you have this nailed. Knowing Mikey the way that i do - this has been his perferred strategy. He will push the pace in hopes that he will drain the others kick. Which i never understood as the kid has a huge kick and is such a powerful runner. Been a pleasure watching him develop as a person and a runner since he's been in 7th grade running middle school XC.
