If Scott ate meat he'd be miles ahead and actually recovering instead of hobbling along in a broken down fog.

A "runner" probably wouldn't do very well. The majority of your time would be spent fast-hiking making running credentials pointlesss.
I could easily see a top ultra guy (WS 100 winner) drop under 40 days with proper recon and training. Jurek is basically doing this on a lark, in his 40s, with a bad knee.
Alan
Got it thanks
The thrust of the thread is different than I thought. .
Scott Jurek former ultra runner turned novice hiker close to breaking thru hiking record set by highly decorated and experienced hiker..

Hmmmm, can you show your work on those ratios?
I get:
100 miles to 1 mile = ratio of 100:1
2189 miles to 100 miles = ratio of 21.89:1.
In terms of ratios, the 100 mile is nearly 5x FURTHER from a Mile than 100 Miles is to the AT.
May want to give that one a closer read, pal.
5:00am - It looks like Scott Jurek was up and moving around 12 midnight, covering 14.5 miles in 5 hours, about 2.8 mph, so he's moving well! He is past White Cap Mountain, now fording the E. Branch Pleasant River, the 2110.7 mile point in his 2178.3 mile adventure. 67.6 miles to go, with 36 hours until the record cutoff. He's looking good.

How much of that is flat/runnable?

His next 30 miles, just looking at the AT checkpoints list, are steady at about 1300 ft elevation, then dropping down to 600 ft. No idea what the footing is like. He should make good time the next 30 miles.
He's in the "100 mile section" of Maine. Wet and slippery terrain.

How much sleep has he gotten, though? Sounds like maybe 3 hours?

The spreadsheet isn't updated as to where Jurek may have stopped -- clicking through the GPS signals, it isn't clear to me that he stopped that long anywhere last night. From around 6 am yesterday, to around 5 am this Saturday morning, it looks like Jurek covered 47 miles, so overnight he averaged a little over 2 mph.
Around 9 am he passed Crawford Pond, so at that point 62 miles (100k ultra!) to Katahdin... No big climbs or descents until he gets to Mt. K, so if he's capable of running, he could actually make pretty good time.
Last update 9:45 am. Almost 2/3 way from Crawford Pond to Church Pond. He's moving.
Looks like he slept from 5 to 8 or so.
New update at 10:05 am: Almost at Church Pond.
Cooper Pond is next, followed by Mud Pond, which is 2132.8.

I see now -- looks like he just stopped on the trail for a couple hours midway between East Pleasant Branch River and Crawford Pond.
Jurek at Cooper Pond as of 10:42 am.
So it looks like 48 miles yesterday, and already 8 miles today. He had 55 miles to go when he crossed Jo-Mary Rd at 10:30 am. Definately picking up the pace.

I'm learning from his pacing, rest and refueling pattern. A very patient approach. Fascinating. He paused just past Jo-Mary Rd, looks like he's gathering himself again for the haul to Abol Bridge. Hard-working man!
I'm already looking forward to Kilian Jornet destroying this still walking record.
11:50 am and he's at Jo-Mary Lake.
Wonder if he's enjoying the view:
