Scott Jurek Appalachian Trail Record Attempt

One question. Is he camping or staying in hotels/motels?

I don't know for sure - but based on the few photos I've seen it looks like a "supported" attempt - he's probably sleeping in either a van or a tent

(that's the approach Karl Meltzer did last summer).

I hope he sets a new record!

This guy's book changed my life. One of the most mentally tough athletes I've ever come across. No doubt he'll shatter this.

I despise these AT speed record attempts. The AT is for experiencing nature and meeting other hikers. You get only a little of the first and none of the second if you run it and sleep in an RV every night. Fortunately, the AT Conservancy refuses to acknowledge any speed records.

He's not running the whole thing. And he's been posting about all the people he's met along the way. Everyone enjoys nature differently. This is his way of making the most of his hike.

I'm sure he's supported. The unsupported record is 58 days 9 hours (Matt Kirk in 2013). Thanks for the post. It'll be interesting to see if he can match/surpass Pfarr Davis' record, which is pretty amazing. I read Jurek's book when it came out, but don't recall that he's ever done a truly extended, weeks-long effort like this one... has he done this type of thing before?

Tough effort, but it has a made- for -Facebook quality, like the many bloggers who post their daily trainIng and local accomplishments, as if anyone cared. Exhibitionism, narcissism, self - promotion. Karnazes redux.

Also, he's trying to make a living by running, and media pays the bills. Don't be too jealous, now.

More power to him. He's obviously older now than when he was winning WS100. Good on him for finding a new challenge. Life should be full of challenges.

Personally, I disdain the "supported" treks. They seem fake, lame, and contrived to me. Man up, and carry your own supplies.

Yawn. Just a desperate attempt by Jurek to feel important again.

Ummm, you bring hate to the 800, you don't get hate from it.

Unless you mean in the "I hate running the 800" kind of way.

No hate, here. I am just totally uninterested in this feat. I like running. I also like hiking and backpacking. To me the AT is for that later. What Jurek is doing has nothing at all to do with why I love and how I experience the AT.

If he likes it then more power to him.

Can't you appreciate different kinds of athletic achievements?

To me both of these are worthwhile achievements:

1. Running twice around a 400m oval track as fast as you can.

2. Running 50+ miles a day for 40-45 days.

Why do you have to chose one or the other?

The Appalachian Trail? What, you mean that basically paved bike path through the "mountains" of the east coast? The one that has four-star overnight lodging along the way?

A real challenge would be the PCT through deserts, glaciers, up and over volcanoes and literally from border to border. Or even the Continential Divide Trail.

This will be a good warm up for Jurek when he hopefully goes for a hike worth having.
