So far, UW has now updated their Cross country roster with the exception of incoming freshman. Aaron Nelson has graduated and is no longer on the roster.
People with eligibility but no longer on the roster (Year they would be):
Timothy Cummings (SR.)
Sumner Goodwin (RSo.)
Nick Harris (Jr.)
Meron Simon (Sr.)
A.J. Yarnall (RSo.)
Meron is transferring to NC State, did the others transfer too or did they quit running altogether?
It's my understanding that Meron Simon is graduating from UW at the end of summer quarter and will be in grad school at NC State. As far as Cummings, Goodwin, Harris & Yarnall go, I'm not sure.
From their seven that went to NCAAs last year, they lose Nelson (graduated), Simon (graduated-using fifth year at NC State), and Yarnall.
Nick Harris is now at Colorado.
The problem is that Greg allows trouble to stick around way too long. Bitter females like Goethals are bad for team continuity. Greg let her not show up to workouts and then she would complain about how she was treated. Threads like this only exist from athletes that we all hated anyhow. Sure Greg struggles a little with workouts but he is always there to talk to.
Speaking of Goethals, is she no longer with the Hansons team?
Also, I will assume that Nick Harris will have to sit out a year before he can run for Colorado?

Greg is also a negative recruiter, can be very rude if he perceives you have no value to him, and is possibly the most arrogant coach in the nation.
Everything has fallen into his lap. He didn't get the UW job because of his accomplishments. He was an alum, who was brought back as an assistant after a year or two at Auburn as an assistant. Then the Head Coach at UW was let go and Greg inherited the whole program.
They did win a XC National Championship, but everyone who knows anything about the program gives all the credit for that to Kelly Strong. It's hard to argue with that given how much the program improved while she was there, and the results since she left, and she left with the cupboard full of talent.
UW would be as good as it is already pretty much with any coach. It's the premier University in the state and Washington state is loaded with distance talent at the high school level. A coach who has a proven ability to develop kids could have a national powerhouse there.
The only thing I'll give him is that he does get great recruits. He is very good at showing the love to the elite high school kid. Some of it by tearing down other programs, but it does appear to work. Unfortunately the experience he gives them once they get there is not good, and they certainly don't perform to the level of their talent. UW can also attract better walk on talent than anyone in the nation other than Oregon.
The only team in the Country that does less with more talent then Washington is Stanford. Is it terrible coaching over training what gives? thanks

Wait, what about "Team Megan" and how the coaching staff got her help and saved her from herself? Was that just more BS?
Also, where is A-E Neale these days? She's still on the roster, but doesn't appear to have raced in almost two years.
Neale raced at UW Invite; was about 5th runner for UW.
Meh... Decent spread, but pretty soft times for their fast home course.

Did University of Portland lose a bunch of people from their 3rd place team? UW beat them.
Sumner has transferred to Gonzaga. On his Gonzaga bio, when asked why he chose Gonzaga, he said "being happy."
Who knows what the real story is, but it's not a great reflection on the UW team. Gonzaga could be in a good position to pounce on the UW fallout. Tyson slowly is developing a decent program there, getting good transfers and recently a Footlocker Finalist from Montana.
On the plus side for UW, Gardner looks to be in shape this year. They still were well-beaten at their own invite, though.

Per the "Official 10/2-10/3 Weekend NCAA XC Talk - Notre Dame, Paul Short, UW, Rocky Mountain, etc." thread:

Neale did not race at the UW invite.

She is listed on the Team USA Minnesota roster.

I ran side-by-side with Greg Metcalf in the early 90s and the man you guys are talking about doesn't even resemble the guy I know. Greg is easily the most motivational guy I've ever met and he singlehandedly changed the culture of UW distance running as an athlete. I don't think I've ever met anyone who is more suited to be a coach. I saw him at the NCAA XC champs 2 years ago. I was with another former teammate and despite being incredibly busy and in a stressful environment Greg took the time to kneel down and talk to our kids and encourage them about their running. I would be proud to send my kids to run for Greg some day and I know they would be in good hands.
Some of us have observed him from somewhat more objective vantage points over the past 15 years. Greg has some very personable qualities, but he uses them very selectively.

Yup, earlier in this thread someone posted that he is quite possibly the most arrogant coach in the country. I think that is highly accurate.quote]Another Coach wrote:Some of us have observed him from somewhat more objective vantage points over the past 15 years. He can be quite charming when he wants to be, but that is not his default mode, so it comes off as phony when you see him in action for any length of time. I'm sure he is quite warm to his family and close friends but most people are.
He was a great college runner but like others I believe his primary qualification for landing his current job was only that he was a former all-American alum. He seems to have better luck with the women's side of his program as the men's teams have really struggled lately. XC team currently unranked, track team last Spring scored zero points at NCAAs.
