The vast majority of schools don't have the scholarship money to recruit every event in track and field. Colorado made the decision to focus their program on xc and the distance events and it's working out pretty well for them I'd say.
At Pac-12 championships
10k- 1st and 3rd
5k- 3rd and 4th (behind the 2 best runners in the country)
Steeple- 1st and 2nd
1500- 3rd or 4th for Saarel. Can't remember
To say nothing of 3 straight conference titles and back to back national titles in xc. Would rather have that than be mediocre at both sports.
Most top schools in track and field specialize in a certain group of events anyways. Oregon won indoors with all distance runners. Florida got 2nd with all sprinters and field events. More often than not that's how the game is played.
