I coach a kid in the 1600 who runs about a 4:55. i think to qualify into our district meet, he will need to break 4:50.
There is a kid in the league who likes to go out really fast (around a 60 first lap) and that draws all the kids in the race with him at this breakneck pace.
Should I tell my runner to hold back and try to run a 70 first lap and then move up as the race goes on? Or should I let him compete with the competition and let the chips fall where they may?
Under the first scenario, I'm afraid he will feel out of the race and mentally lose it after the first lap.
Under the second scenario, I'm afraid of crashing and burning of course.
What would you advise?
