I live in the easy bay but made it down to Stanford for the Payton Jordan meet yesterday. In between heats, I was behind a group of kids (well, early 20s students if I had to guess) discussing how to solve something using Greens functions and describing the concentration profile and a few other things (I just caught a few keywords).
I was quite impressed. Never have or expected to hear a conversation like that at a track meet.
You should sit behind the players' bench of any Florida State football game. The players usually discuss things like that during the game.

Did he get away with it completely when as a #1 pick he signed for just 4 yrs and $23 million? Didn't top picks formerly get upwards of $50 million?

That was before the hold-out. Teams are pretty strictly limited on how much they can spend on rookies, and considering that $23 mil is more than Clowny got last year for first overall pick, and that even Newton signed for 4 years / 22 million, I'd say Winston is looking okay. I think it's probably the biggest contract since the negotiations.
At Stanford, they've probably figured out the average 30 yo who can solve problems with Green's function tends to make more than the average 30 yo who ran in college.
Don't worry, Stanford is a huge U, and a very good one, but it does have a lot of kids who'd be clueless in this conversation.
