I love running, but there is way too much garbage on Facebook about the importance of running. Too many inspirational posts, "share if you're running a race this weekend!", etc. This is the legacy of George Sheehan's writing, all variations on the "running is a noble profession" theme. Apparently, signing up for a 5K and finishing in 30 minutes is the equivalent of climbing Everest or curing cancer.
Now I have to go for my run, but that's all I'm going to say about it. ;)
Perhaps it is part of George Sheehan's legacy, but not the legacy he was trying to create. If you take 30sec soundbites of Sheehan, then a 30min 5k'er can think he accomplished Mt Everest. But, when Sheehan quotes Greek philosopher about the escasos, aegon, and arete, all of us (except Desi Linden - the only one I can quickly think of) need to swallow hard and think twice about what we are really doing.
