Yes, he was doping at 15-18. No, he never ran anything clean.

Salazar has had Rupp sleeping in an altitude tent since Rupp was 14. Altitude tent is only one of Salazar's tricks. Also, changing Rupp $200 per month for coaching? Yup, I am sure Salazar charged Rupp his full price.

Is running on a treadmill in an altitude tent the same as high altitude training?

Go speak with some specialists, then you'll realize there's no issue there. You uncompetitive types with no heart, never able to crack 5 minutes in the mile are riddled with jealousy top to bottom.

Rupp is proof that good coaching will take you a long way. One has to wonder how many other Americans have never come close to their potential because of a lack of consistent coaching over the years. Rupp's career in terms of coaching is similar to what was seen in Europe up through the 80's before the sport started getting killed by soccer - runners had the same coach for years, qualified knowledgeable coaches.

It's not like Rupp was some 9-flat two-miler who surprisingly turned into a world beater. Since he started running, it's been clear that Rupp is one of the most talented American runners of all time. Sure, a lot of runners don't reach their potential, but it's not like there are hordes of sub-27 guys out there just squandering their talent. Rupp is about as good as one might have expected him to be. (And he's benefited from the exodus of young Africans from the track to the roads.)

There are only three other American runners in the modern era with comparable talent: Webb, Verzbicas, and Fernandez.

Ritz was close, but his curse was that his sweet spot fell between the 10k and the marathon.

Hall only seemed great (for a moment) because he popped a couple of fast times before a million Africans totally changed our understanding of what constitutes a good marathon.
