$ 25 gift certificate in a smallish race for a 41:50 10 k, 2nd in 40-44 age division. But it was a PR so I was very proud. And still my PR 17 years later, so obviously it will stay my PR for the Duration. Good speedwork for my one-and-only Marathon @ NY 2 weeks later. Don't ask.

NR Twilight
About ten years ago my wife and I ran in a very well-known road race. The race had advertised decent prize money through something like eight places for both men and women. The men's race was solid (those guys earned their $) but except for the top two finishers, the women's race was pretty weak, especially given the amount of money available. Just before the awards ceremony one of the race officials gathered the top women and told them that the race director had decided to limit the cash awards for women to the top six finishers - no explanation given. And if I recall correctly - I'm not sure about this - the fifth and sixth place finishers were given less money than advertised. My wife was the last cash winner. Ironically, the two women who got gypped were popular local runners who were thrilled to have placed so high at their town's marquee event. They were crushed. My wife didn't really care about her money (we were in town visiting relatives and had entered the race just for fun) but she was livid at how badly the local runners were treated. She wrote a letter to the RD but never got a response.
These are great stories. I can't imagine any of these races being in New England, with its populaiton of dedicated runners. I think you'd have to break 15 in the 5k just to get $100. Any of you money winners win it in NE?
