Silly comment. If Snell had today's mondo tracks to run on in 1962, and the pacers they now have, he'd have been a 1:43 flat and 3:32 runner at least.
There are less than a handful of men capable of that today, and Snell was running 50 years ago!
Snell is one of the 2 greatest 800/1500 runners in history with several world records and 3 Olympic golds. Kiprop isn't in the same league as Snell in terms of all time greatness. When he breaks the 8 & mile WRs and another Olympic title, then come back and you may have the semblance of a point.
That doesn't make what I said wrong. I'll even give Snell 4 seconds off his 1500..
Competition is way deeper now.
Kiprop has more competition making his national team that Snell did in his entire career.
Lol, I heard Snell liked to have a few beers after every race, whereas Kiprop preferred to load up on more EPO for the next workout.
Snell ran 3:54 in his first major mile race when he didn't even know how to pace it and just blasted the last 200m. Somebody claimed here recently he likely would have been the first man under 3:50 and when you look at the video you can believe it.
If Snell had been running today, on tracks like Monaco, in the Diamond league, had been 100% professional (inc. diet and alcohol), not retired in his prime, modern pacing (rather than non-existant pacing), even without EPO he would be running faster than Kiprop did, AND likely 1:41 in the 800m. And this is a guy who like most Australians/New Zealanders at the time of that athletic ability would likely 9/10 times have chosen a different sport which he was equally proficient in as a youth (and Australians/New Zealanders equally dominant at).
These old 'Running was rubbish before the Africans took over' posts are looking more and more outdated and foolish with every passing day and every new doping bust to come out of Kenya (and hopefully soon Epiopia). These people wanted to erase the entire history of non-African running and make 1989 or so 'year zero' when running became a 'real sport'. Now it's clear we should be erasing the last 30 years or so and even the IAAF came close to agreeing (and would have if it weren't for outrage from EPO GOATs such as El G.
