Fact checking time:
1. webb is eligible for the olympics. YES! and after this race and because of this race. just needs a 140 rank or better. He will have that NOW. rankings updated shortly.
2. this was a World cup not a WTS so its worthless. WRONG! winner David Haus was 5th or 6th in London. That would be the Olympics folks.Courtney Atkinson has been top level for years. Webb was only 20 seonds off the win and seconds from the podium. Many in the top 30 are regulars at WTS races and Alan beat most of them.
3. Kanute and zefarus were training this race only, hence easy run. WRONG! racers don't fly to OZ for training races on the USAT dime. How stupid are you? points are cut throat all this year. nothing is for training.
You are over reacting and taking triathlon too seriously. This race is nothing more than triathlon's version of your local Turkey Trot.

By Monday, there will be 12 Americans ranked in the top 140. No countries in the world have more than that in the top 140.
Although the top end is weak (highest ranked American in 16th), there is certainly a lot of depth in the US. More than any country in the world.
Webb has moved up through the ranks really quickly in the past 10 months (from unranked to 120th)...[/quote]
Correction.
The US now have 14 guys in the top 140 as of this morning
Webb is now ranked 10th American
118th overall...
awesome. he is now eligible for the US Tri Team. Lets see how the selection races are chosen.
Webb jumped 41 places on the rankings list to 118th. 140 or under gets you on the team.
This weekend he races in NZ and will get more points..

Good job Alan!!
Here are some great pics of Webb getting beast mode on that run. My estimation is he ran by 20 plus guys in that 5k. Look at the swim shots. Was an epic break crashing on the guys...

Webb is back!!
Who would have thought after all those difficult years that he would reach the dizzy heights of the top 120 triathletes in the world? What a comeback

According to average yearly income. 95% of the countries in the World , families could not afford to buy a bike. So out of the remaining 5% , triathlon was invented by American's, and nearly all other counties put Football (soccer) way ahead in National priorities.

Triathlon is considered by some to have its beginnings in 1920s France.[8] According to triathlon historian and author Scott Tinley (and others[9]), the origin of triathlon is attributed to a race during the 1920s–1930s that was called variously "Les trois sports", "La Course des Débrouillards", and "La course des Touche à Tout." This race is held every year in France near Joinville-le-Pont, in Meulan and Poissy.
Webb has bib 39 for his next race in NZ. It's a pretty big field (77 athletes). He'll be right in the middle of the field at the start of the swim and during transition. This will be a new experience for him...
Nice to see him move up...
I have no understanding of ITU, rankings, or Olmypic qualification for the triathlon. My only experience with triathlon is watching Mark Allen on TV completing ironman hawaii in a thong. Can anyone explain Webb's performance relative to the Olympic caliber triathletes and whether the Olympics are a realistic goal or not? I'm looking for something in plain english. I can't get clear information from the various triathlon experts on here throwing out assertions.
1. An athlete needs a world rank of 140 or lower
2. Then they need to get a spot at the trials race
Webb is now ranked 118. He needs to hold that rank and nail the trials race for a spot on the team. The rest is up to you to read through and figure. We are not spoon feeding you.
USAT qualifying procedure is described here:

Good luck figuring it out . . .
The short answer is that Webb has a plausible chance of making the US team, he is not currently one of the favorites to do so, but he's still improving and a bit of a wildcard having only been in the sport a short while. As things stand now, it would be a very big surprise if any American male were to contend for an Olympic medal in 2016.
As they say though, "That's why they run the race." It will be fun to watch his progress.

Webb should track down and speak with Manny Huerta, who will also be at this race. Manny beat hotter and higher ranked Americans at that time, Shoemaker and Chrabot, to get a major upset spot on the US tri team in a gutsy race at trials. He was a torrid swimmer for years with a great run but he got his rank high enough to be eligible for the olympics and he rallied for the team on the day that mattered. He will be racing for Puerto Rico, not the US, this weekend but I think Alan could get some great feedback from someone who suffered the same triathlon style fate that challenges Alan now.
I am excited for Alan to get more confidence and rankings points this weekend. Running through the field on the run fires a racer up like no other and he will likely run faster here. He was only 15 seconds off the podium in Australia... after running down like 20 guys..
Let's go Alan!!
If Webb beats Maloy in NZ, it will be a big deal. He was not too far behind him the last time they raced (it was an Olympic distance event).
That is the key thing to watch for in Alan's next race.
...in addition to his performance in T1...
His chance to beat Maloy will be very correlated to his T1 time...
Maloy not so much. right now, Webb needs to: 1) swim well 2) transition well 3) and be in the hunt while unleashing his run. 4) most importantly, get his head fully in the motivation space with Consistency. Focusing on people when his results are all over the map consistency wise makes no sense.
Getting is of very little concern now. If it happens, great. Internal focus is everything now, his own execution, not external focus. Other Americans will be key next year. No concern for Webb now.
Did he look relaxed?

Unlike track, time is meaningless. It's all about competition and by definition "others". He has no chance of winning in NZ as Murray is in the race (I'm sure that Alan would like to prove me wrong, but...). Maloy would be an awesome target for him...
Sorry...

In the event no USA athletes finish in the top 9 at the test event, it will come down to the points race, and Webb is way off the back in that race. It will be very challenging for him to catch up even if the top 3 don't race this season.
You either haven't read or didn't understand the selection criteria. There are a few opportunities for automatic selection (starting with coming top 8 at Rio). Assuming no one grabs any of the auto qualifiers, it will indeed come down to a points race -- but all the points will come from five selection events. Four of those events will be this August and September (Rio, Stockholm, Edmonton, Chicago), and the fifth will be sometime in 2016. So if the top 3 "don't race this season," they'll have 0 points and not be selected.
Bottom line: Webb (and anyone else who wants to make the team) has to nail those five events. They can grab an auto spot by placing very highly in a few specific cases, but most likely at least some some of the spots will come down to cumulative points from those five races.
You are assuming the US will have 3 mens slots. Part of the points chase is to earn slots for your team.
US only sent 2 men in 2012.
