Yes, this might qualify as a HUGE upset... if the following were not true:

1) The Houston guy was spotted a 1+ second lead in a 400m race.

2) The Tulsa guy already set meet records in the 200m and 400m that same day.

Sub-2:00/km pace seems pretty impressive. Please edit!

Rotich was-

2nd in the mile to his own teammate (ahead of Taylor who was 3rd)

1st in the 5k

2nd in the 3k.

So Rotich had 3 races in his belt (a 5k, and 2 mile prelims) by the time he got to the 3k, compared to taylors 2.

That's how most upsets are.

As far as Houston, you're correct. Had a 5-7m lead on UCONN.

The 800m leg did win the conference meet in an upset. His best time going in was 1:51.9 this year and he beat a couple 1:49-1:50 guys with Chavez from UCONN being a 1:47 guy from the year before. So that's a decent size upset in itself.

Other big upsets I saw from the conference USA meet was actually David Diaz from Rice winning the 800m in 1:54. His PR was 1:54 and he took down several 1:51-1:52 low kids. Not crazy, but how often does a 1:54 kid win a conference meet?

How about Hassan Omar (4:14, 8:18, 14:21) of UMBC beating AA Steeplechaser John Prizzi (8:42 Steeple, 8:02 flat 3k) of New Hampshire in both the 5k AND 3k at America Easts? No prior races for either, no other events for either, just these two head-to-head showdowns.

Interesting note, due to the Crossplex being shut down because of weather, the CUSA indoor championships were held in a single day. Considering this, Anthony Rotich had to run a 5k, mile and 3k all in the same day. That is a pretty daunting triple.

Not a huge upset, but Marquette over Georgetown on both the men and women's side at Big East Indoors.
