You are thinking of the early 90s Air Huarache. It was my all-time favorite triathlon shoe. There was enough neoprene in the upper design that you could wear it without laces.
I liked the Huarache a lot, although I could have done without the split toe.
I loved the Sock Racer, liked the Sock Trainer.
I still don't understand why shoes don't use velcro like all three of those did.
