LRC should have said something about the winner of the race, but Robertson is clearly the unusual story here. Kenya is so good at distance running that a sub-60 Kenyan is just not unusual. That Robertson's feat is a story is basically an indictment of non-African distance running.
Japan is better than the U.S., particularly adjusting for population, in the half marathon and marathon. The U.S. is much, much better at middle and long distances on the track, and has a passel of recent medals to prove it, from U.S. men's world xc silver, over Kenya, to Jenny's World gold and silver, Rowbury's World medal from Berlin, Cain's World Junior 3k gold, Wilson's multiple world youth/junior/indoor golds, Nick's world silver, Rupp's Olympic silver, Leo's Olympic silver, Brenda's medal, and Centro's world silver and bronze (plus fourth at London).
