When I was coaching, I always thought the track/xc coaches awards were a bit ridiculous for two reasons.
1) I didn't like how the awards were handed out. Whoever won ncaas always was coach of the year. Whoever won a conference title was always winning conference/regional coach of the year. That's not the way they do it in pro sports. If you're team was supposed to suck, but was pretty good, then maybe you deserve it over some powerhouse program. My boss at Cornell, Nathan Taylor was a genius, but does he need to win regional coach of the year award every single year?
2) I thought in large part there were just a ton of awards handed out to try to make people look good. So people could hang their hat on something and not get fired.
Anyway, the coaches association decided to do HS awards for the first time this year. Given that Bill Aris coached the winning boys and girls teams, I'd actually be fine with the national winning coach winning as that's the way they always do it in our sport. Well guess what, they have an award for boys and girls. So do they give him both? No, they only gave him the girls. They spread the love and gave the boys to the runner-up boys team.
