As a Cowboys fan (and an admirer of advanced NFL stats), when the Cowboys scored the game winning touchdown to go up by 3 with 2:32 left, I immediately thought, "They should miss the extra point on purpose."
Basically, stats have historically shown it's better to be up 3 late than 4 in an NFL game.
Why? Because down 4, the other team will go for it onn 4th down all the way to the end of the game and if they score (a TD) you lose. Up 3, the offense won't go for it on 4th down once in field goal range. So even if the offense gets a drive going, they often get conservative and kick a field goal where it's basically a 50-50% chance of winning for both teams.
Up 3, the defense can still win the game by stopping the offense from scoring. The only difference is the final 30 yards.
Sure enough, I was right.
Using the win probability calculator here:

the Cowboys had a 74% chance of winning the game up 4 with 2:32 left. I f they'd been up just 3, their win percentage would have been 82%.
I think in the next 10 years, we'll see an NFL coach purposely do what I'm proposing but we're not quite there yet. NFL coaches are going for it more on 4th down now but purposely giving up points is about a decade away.
What do you think?
