How exactly is a top basketball player, football player, baseball player, boxer, golfer, hockey player , supposed to act? Seems they are only supposed to excel at their sports. Character is irrelevant. So what if they enjoy the benefits of automatic deference as role models in everyday life and sponsorship opportunities and social networking. Escort enjoyment, gf beating, violence, weapons and drugs, gambling, hypocrisy, lying, is ok.
How is a preacher and church leader supposed to act? Seems to me the only thing they are supposed to do is give good sermons and get a good turnout in the pews.
The thing is though, we're not talking about a top basketball player or athlete from any of those other sports. Those sports have large followings in the United States. Ask a random guy or girl on the street who Lebron James is, or Peyton Manning, or Derek Jeter, and they know. That's because their respective sports are popular. To be completely honest, track & field is not popular. Running is popular, hell ask anybody if they run nowadays and they'll say yeah, but ask them if they know who Galen Rupp is or who the top marathoners are and you'll be left with blanks. Usain Bolt is popular, because the 100 meter is easy to watch and understand, but pretty much every other big name in track besides maybe Meb Keflezighi and Mo Farah is unknown to the casual sports fan. And even then, the casual American sports fan can't even name American stars (try asking people for Meb's last name)!
A 25 year old pro runner who's never won an Olympic medals doesn't have the same kind of pull or spotlight that a top basketball or baseball player has. Even Rupp, with the American record, Olympic silver, stellar college career, and multiple USATF championships, is largely unknown to people who don't follow track close enough. The average person doesn't bother to care what a pro runner does....for now. Centro has the best shot to break through. We'll see after 2016, though.
