Seriously, it is the greatest city in the USA by a long way.

Anyone who doesn't think highly of Denver can get bent, as far as I'm concerned.

Denver's a nice place to go on a vacation, but it isn't where serious people go to accomplish big things.
1.) NYC- the amount of $ it takes to live here plus the sheer amount of cool stuff to do beats all the others for prestige. The only people who can actually live comfortably there are mid-top level finance people, old money, and CEO's. Their middle class are doctors/lawyers.
2.) SF- for the same reasons as NYC, but better weather and outdoor opprtunities. It is smaller than NYC though and takes itself less seriously and somehow this drops it to 2.
3.)Boston- One of the oldest places in the US, tons of history, and absurdly educated (MIT, Harvard, BU, BC, etc) with plenty of start-ups and old money. Whenever you mention you're from here people wonder if you are ivy league educated or had a high end job there. Much more affordable than NYC or SF, though.
4.) Seattle- Very cool, intellectual, outdoorsy, modern city. Difficult to break into job wise for a professional, very very educated and innovative workforce. It is the Boston of the west coast but doesn't count on history and tradition to make its bones.
5.) all the cool small cities people want to move to but can't because they're already saturated are roughly the same: Boulder, Eugene, Bend, Charleston, Burlington, Santa Cruz, Savannah, Santa Fe. All around 100K people, old, educated, and very difficult to break into job wise
Berkeley, West LA, Frisco, Salt Lake, Silicon Valley, Santa Cruz, The OC, Dago, Santa Barbara, Marina Del Rey... hotbed of hi tech, kool, center of world entertainment, focus of hipster trends, media centrale, and all that.

If you are a male between 23-40, and can afford to live in Santa Barbara, move there right away.
There is a mass shortage of guys in that age range in SB, because the guy's can't afford to live there unless they've "made" it.
Why move there? Women, women, women: single, available, and looking for a sub age-40 guy to have fun with.
Well onto page two and no votes for Rochester, NY. It's really hard to take this place seriously sometimes.

Silicon Valley is not a city.
Most people I know from that area know it is devoid of culture, character, beauty etc..
And let's say, "less than proud" to claim it. You may as well live in Sacramento and save a few bucks. It's the bowels of Bay Area.
I've lived in one of above mentioned cities for some time, and wouldn't mind getting out. It has been overrun by hipsters, posers, yuppies and all other sorts of maggot doooshbags.
Bought a house here in early 90s. Would walk with decent amount of scratch.
But where to go?? A cabin in Montana?
That's the question.
Woodside, CA
If you are not Steve Jobs or Larry Elison rich you can't live there.

^This. Denver is for has-been wannabes. No one should ever move here, it's an awful place to live.
Move to Detroit.

Great alternative! Chicago is also a great choice. Especially for people not talented enough to make it in NYC or the west coast.
