If this is limited to runners who are still alive (as a lot of dead guys are forgotten), I would go with Curtis Stone. Made three straight Olympic teams in 5000 and 10,000 (1948-1956, placed as high as 6th), won multiple US championships, won both the 5000 and 10000 in 1952 US olympic trials, not done again until GR
