It's a meaningless technicality. Jimi was American. 99% of the band's material was written by him. The music was directly influenced by, and was primary in nature, American blues. Jimi was the front man, the focal piece, and he held down half of the duties by playing guitar and singing. He was the sole reason people paid attention to their music. Yes, England adopted him and catapulted his career. But for all intents and purposes his band (which btw changed members multiple times and was 2/3 American for as long as it was 2/3 British) was American.
