Not a dick move. You can\'t blame the guy for being competitive in a race like this leading into postseason. It would also be silly not to put all those plyos to use by not showing off that nasty kick. Dressel 2014, Watch the Throne

Dressel: "I said ok because I thought that would kind of relax them, and I wanted to come away with the win.....I don't really think they were expecting me to go."
I'm sorry, but if you want to be competitive be competitive. Don't lie to guys to lull them to sleep and then take of sprinting saying neener neener neener I fooled you. That's not what being competitive and going for the win is about.

That tells me he is going to the most successful of the 3. True champions NEVER are ok with losing. Doesn't matter if they are playing sports, chess, cards, etc. Winners are gonna win and haters are gonna hate. Dressel played those guys and did them a favor; they'll never make a farce of a "race" again.
Bravo John!
Now, if they were professionals and money was involved and agreed upon beforehand, I might feel different.

Someone should tell that to Cheserek. He might find more success and wins in big races.
Maybe you're just trying to get a response; maybe you really believe what you're posting. I'm fairly confident Mr. Dressel is going to get an attitude adjustment some point in his Colorado career. In the end winning Borderclash doesn't mean much. I'm not sure what pride there is in telling two guys you'll run in together and then throwing in a sneak sprint around the last corner. If that feels good to Dressel more power to him.
Not trying to "get a response". And I'm not the type who would have agreed and then backed out of it, but I can respect that competitor that is within him, especially after he mentioned that he gave the win to a senior when he was a sophomore and it just didn't sit right with him.
The dick move was by Anderson and Maton to try to turn the event into a WWF scripted competition just because they are in the midst of training through to a bigger race. You don't pull a deal like that mid-race on someone unless you are hurting and don't want to lose.
First Maton ditches his teammates so he can run FL and now he's showing more selfishness because he knew he didn't have the legs to win. I'm glad Dressel played him. Hopefully the top guys at NXN will ask Anderson to hold hands and sing kumbaya as they cross the line together and get played again too.
Then why didn't Dressel just say he wasn't interested and let the race play out? Instead it appears he agreed to it and then took advantage of it late in the race. Not cool.
So, if money is involved, you'd be ok with it?! WTF?

Why do these HS kids race so much!! These guys have been going almost weekly (or more) since August.
I know right? Could you I magine professional sports teams playing more than 5-6 times a year? Or if high scho football played every week? How the hell could they make it though the season?

Because he didn't have time to think it through in the middle of a race where he had fallen and had to work his tail off to catch back up with those two. Deals like that should be made beforehand. Any good poker player would do what John did. Maton and Anderson tried to put a play on Dressel and he turned it around on them, which is why I say good on him. It also makes for a much better rivalry in the future, although I doubt Dressel had the foresight to be cognizant of that.
As a former pro, I can assure you that monetary deals are made before and during races and that is something that once agreed upon is much more serious. I don't expect anyone who hasn't been in that situation to understand so won't explain it further; you either get it or you don't.
Yeah, you guys need to watch the interview with Maton and Anderson. They didn't seem upset, at all. this wasn't a very serious race so I don't think they'll lose any sleep

over Twitter they made it very clear that they were upset.
HS XC has evolved into an absurd amount of racing. The race was just not important in the big scheme of things. Cruising in together was actually the most competitive move.

Maybe they should have twittergrammed ahead of time that they were going to make a farce of the race so the characters in play could have rehearsed their parts together.
They should be upset, at themselves. They threw a race and look like fools.
You don't get it. You're being hypocritical. As you said, monetary deals are made "during races," yet Dressel didn't have time to think about it in the "middle of a race." BS. Based on his quotes, he wanted to win the race, period. Man up and let the other guys know that you're all in, every man for himself. That's all I'm saying. As a former pro, you should understand this as well.
I am glad everyone is enjoying this, John, Matt, and myself are good friends. We really don't care about what the outcome of this race was.

Hey Tanner, first off glad to see you post on here. Personally, I think Dressel should of said that he wanted to race it in rather than resort to dirty tricks to victory( Doubt he would of won if you had all raced it in). Good luck at NXN next weekend
From John Dressel @Runnin_Dressel on twitter:
Prior to the race, I WASN'T included in any race plans. A race is a race and by all means I didn't drive 6 hours to PDX to not "race."

Just for clarification..The plan going into today's race was not to finish together. What happened today was "MY" race plan.

Well then... Maybe Nike should invent another conflicting national championship that requires a regional qualifier meet... or completely meaningless sub-regional meets ("border clashes") all around the country.

Doesn't matter. Jesse Reiser will darkhorse footlocker this year. Most underrated prep in the nation and I'm willing to bet on ATLEAST a top 3 finish. Kid has more heart than any prep distance runner in the United States.
Maybe at nxn. The double back from nxn then footlocker the next week is a bidge
This is typical race talk, nothing new.
Runner A: "Are you ready for a race today?"
Runner B: "I'm suffering from a cold, have a pain in my foot, haven't been sleeping well, and just ran my highest week ever, so I'm taking it easy today."
Translation: "I'm going to kick your butt."
