They tried - finishing top-20 is not an easy thing to do and it was over their heads. Look at how they finished: Pepiot went from 10 to 47; Watson from 45 (3k) to 155; Neuman 86 to 175; Winn 19 (5k) to 60.
Would they have had a chance if they had gone out a little more moderately? Yes, but they rolled the dice trying for top 1, 2 or 3, I think.
As has been pointed out, they do not use a ton of scholarships for distance because they have a 'broad' track team, so there is a big drop off from the likes of Chez and Jenkins (who they did not have to use scholarship places to develop, so they were lucky there).
