So I really don't think 10k "speed" is the be all, end all. Intelligent pacing on the other hand is.

I finally broke 3 yesterday (2:57). I'd say a few indicators are a 1:22-1:24HM with 65-75 MPW during the training cycle. I'd also strongly encourage 3x 20 milers in the training cycle and one 23-24 miler. Also I'd encourage several mid week intermediate runs of 14-15 miles with the last 10@ MP. Best of luck!
But I think you need to be in 2:55 shape or better in order to accomplish your first sub 3.
