Not suits, but I am tired of engineers dressing like slobs even when doing presentations to the public or customers.

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that. Looks matter.
If only there were more than two choices between a suit and jeans. Naahhh! No such thing exists.
banana republic.
"travelers"
they're like jeans, but softer, more flattering, and far more comfy than cheap denim. The things cost like $125 but it's pretty easy to find a sale there.

In the tech industry, people look down on you if you wear a suit. They think you are compensating. That's the problem.
I'd prefer to wear a suit, but can't! I'd get laughed at or they'd think I was interviewing with other companies and get fired!
You can rock a semi-casual sport coat look (ideally sans tie) without a raised eyebrow if you have the right attitude and skills. If you show no need to compensate, no one will think you're compensating. They'll just think you have greater aspirations, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Personally after years of working in a finance environment where I had to dress business casual or better every day, I was pretty stoked to go casual again when I changed jobs. I definitely look sloppier but I'm not meeting with customers, nor trying to pick up any females, so I really don't care.
Benefits include not visiting the dry cleaner a single time since I left my old job a few months ago, and getting a bit lazier in other ways. No more shaving every single day, for example.
On the flip side some of my co-workers are disgustingly slovenly so there are pros and cons but in balance I'll take it for now.
When I was young, I used to wear slacks and a tie to work. Now that I am established and work from home most of the time, I work in shorts and a t-shirt (and sometimes not even that). There is no going back. I'll put on a suit when it is required, but why waste the money or the comfort on clothes I don't really care for.
"Higher aspirations"? Sad world when wearing something other than a t-shirt and jeans to your desk job means you're filled with ambition.
These days every nerdy leper with an internet connection and enough upper body strength to depress the power button is an "Engineer". Every frat bro with a WordPress account is a "Software Architect". Take some older dude with glasses who can't type as fast but took calculus in college, and he's a "Data Scientist".
Don't get me started on "Code Ninjas" or "Programming Rockstars". Might as well show up to work in your pajamas.

Me too, shorts and a t shirt, all day, every day. Anything else is unnecessary.
