Hello,so I'm a 14 year old boy and I'm a freshman. Last fall, I started running on my own for about 20-30 mpw. However, I developed a stress fracture in my posterior in my shins after bumping up to 40-50 mpw of mostly just easy runs and tempos and had to take 3 painful months off with absolutely no running. At the time, i had a very slow pr of 19:15. As of now, I'm fully recovered and this summer, I ran about 30-40 mpw in June and 40-50 mpw in July and August. I mostly did easy runs at 8:00 to 9:00 just to be careful, short tempo runs of 20 min., longer tempos of an hour, and long runs of 10-11 mi very slow and relaxed. Two weeks ago, we had our first tough workouts. I did 8X1000 from 3:56 to 3:37 averaged a 6:15 pace, 20 min tempo at 6:50 pace, and 7 mi tempo at 7:05-7:15 pace and easy run paces were at 8:15. We had our first meet last week and i ran 19:28. It actually felt really relaxed and and smooth. I was concentrating on keeping my form and passed a bunch of people at the end. After the race I took a rest day, but after that, I felt horrible on all my runs. The pace on easy runs were slower but i wasn't breathing hard but i couldn't go any faster than about 8:40. Today we had a race, and although the course as harder, I felt like complete trash and my legs were absolutely dead I had a DNF because i stepped into a pothole on the last mile and my foot just hurt like hell and i just collapsed, but now that is healing. I would have fininshed well over 20 if i continued. I'm really slow and i'm a noob, but I just really need some tips on how to make a breakthrough and race well. My goal is to finish low 18 or possibly sub 18 at the end of the season. If any of you guys can give some tips on training or racing tips or help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
