Going to be using my nike victories for xc season as they're so light! However the lacing seems a little frail and although fine on the track I don't want to be leaving one behind on a muddy course. Suggestions?

Would you mean Nike Victory 2's or elites? Just out of curiosity.
I think it's a very bad idea personally. I ran in victory's for track and I wouldn't even consider using them for cross country.
Invest in a pair of legit XC spikes. Depending on your competition level, the Saucony Kilkenny's or Saucony Shay's are good spikes that don't break the bank.
I used Victorys with 9mm pyramid set up in my last time I ran XC about 2 weeks ago. Wouldn't recommend them if it is a longer race though because me calves were shot after 8km. No fear of loosing any laces though if that's your main concern.
Don't have to listen to me though. I'm only an 800 runner that runs XC twice a year for a bit of fun in the off season
Track spikes work great for cross. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Sure, they'll be less durable, but they will easily last you through the season. A typical strategy for me is to get new track spikes in the winter, wear them for indoor and outdoor, then use them for cross before getting new ones for next winter. Victory 2's or Victory Elites will be fine (assuming you aren't running on pavement!)
I've used XC spikes on the track, but not the other way around. I dunno, seems like a track spike sacrifices a lot of durability for weight so it wouldn't translate well. One of my friends used Nike Matumbos for cross and it worked fairly well for him.
Just try it out, I guess.

I did the same thing (with the Matumbos) but I'll tell you right now. The hard spike plate in a track spike and the lack of cushioning sucks on XC courses. I really regretted running XC in them.
OP, it's better to feel comfortable in a race than to have a little bit of a lighter shoe or same a little bit of money.
Thanks for the feedback. I work in a running shop as well so have managed to pick up some long distance track spikes as well which can just be trashed after a couple of races and binned. might resort to duct taping them on but we will see...
