Strong week with lots of quality. I was consistent on my track workout Tuesday, and again I practiced running the last one faster but not all-out – more of a “controlled acceleration” by tightening the screw every 200m.
Wednesday I got a cool opportunity to run with the current XC team for my old high school. My Garmin had finally died that morning so I am not exactly sure what the pace/splits were, but it worked out well because it was a great run-by-feel effort in the spirit of XC, with some occasional accelerations, trails, hills, and a run-to-the barn finish the last 1/2mi or so. Definitely more effort than I would normally put in the day after a workout but nothing that killed me.
Friday was the first MP tempo of the cycle, and I was pleased how it unfolded. I also got to enjoy my new Garmin 10 – sleeker, less bells and whistles than other models, but very functional and gets the job done for a quality price (got mine discounted at $116.99). It took me about 2mi at MP to settle into a good breathing/stride rhythm, but once I did I could pretty much feel the right pace by effort.
Today’s long run turned out to be more a struggle than I had anticipated. I intentionally choose a 3 loop hilly course so I could practice grabbing small water bottles that I filled with 5oz Gatorade, which is the beverage given out at the Philly Marathon. Of course, when I came around at the end of Loop 1, both bottles were already gone. Not sure if it was a “Good Samaritan” trying to keep the neighborhood clean, or some evildoer who has it in for local runners. Let’s just say that the Hansons were right on this one – this 14 miles did feel like the LAST 14 miles of a marathon, haha. I will especially be looking forward to my day off tomorrow now.
Hope everyone else had a great week.
