This is true, but I assume money isn't the point.
I have a PhD in EE and make about $175 salary+bonus plus a decent deal more in stock (~4 years out of grad school). I live in a city with a moderate cost of living...nowhere near CA or NYC. There's no reason I can't live very comfortably on that.
But when I look around there's not a lot of room to move up in the corporate hierarchy unless you're very brilliant and savvy or lucky.
Maybe one good thing about the typical business track is that you start out lower and there are more rungs to climb, even if it takes longer to get to the 6 figure salary range.
I think the way I'm going to deal with this is by changing jobs soon, and by seriously investigating starting a business. At least I won't get as bored in a new job, and attempting to start a business would provide plenty of motivation. Pretty scary to commit to it though.
