i have been working very hard to increase my overall volume this year to improve my marathon time. nearly all of the increase has come in the form of slow easy milage, and i am averaging a good 20mpw more than i ever have...and i have been running since the 70s. i do almost no speedwork and never run faster than threshold pace.
when i race at the 20km.h.m. distance, it is the weirdest thing...i am only a little faster than last year (about 1 minute), but the effort feels so much more intense. it's like, half-marathons feel like 5Ks in tersm of the intensity of the effort.
i am feeling relatively strong, not falling apart at the end of races, but at the same time, the pace feels like i am running all out...and this makes me wonder if i have any hope of improving. can anyone tell me why my races feel like this, and what if anything i should do to improve.
