for 1000m. It was the WR at the time and is still the AR. The 2nd fastest American ever is David Krummenacker with a 2:15.97.
Rick is often overlooked in the discussion of great US middle distance runners.

Your math is bad.
Busted. That's what I get for typing before I put my contacts in. I thought I typed 40...
Still the 7th fastest ever with the 9th fastest time. In the last 15 years only Abubaker Kaki has run faster.
agree, he is underrated.
Although not a heavily raced event, the 1k does get a lot of fast 1500 and 800 guys close to peak shape and Wohlhuter's time is rarely surpassed even by sub 3:30 or 1:42 guys 40 years later. Incredible. Surely, the best American distance performance in the 1970s.
-and he won the bronze in the 800m at Montreal in '76.

+ 15 year old Mary Decker v the Russians (1:23:40)
2:13.9 is absurd for an American in the 70s that no one ever talks about. What was the world record before he broke it?

Great video. Tom Byers, who was National 1500 champion in both the Senior (3:37) and Junior (3:42) events in the same year!

2:16.0 by Daniel Malan in '73.
Second place in Wohlhuter's race was 2:16 by Mike Boit. 3rd was John Walker, 4th was Rod Dixon. I think Wohlhuter still has the Hayward Field record too, and that's no small feat.

Oh, just some scrubs that he beat haha.
The record is 40 years old - how long will it last? I'm not even sure our 1:42 guys Solomon and Symmonds could have broken it if they had tried.

Agree. He was a tough competitor.
If anyone thinks Decker was a doper, think again. Look at her competitiveness at 15 years old, I have never seen a gear shift like that to want to win an 800m race in my life in the last 40 meters.
And 2:02 at 15yrs old is stuff of legend.

I am surprised Symmonds hasn't planned an attempt at it.
