Hear me out here. By eating and drinking, you're pushing your body's limit to beyond its capability if you weren't fueling yourself. So when you go on your long runs, you don't have any fuel so you will start to slow down automatically when you're too thirsty or hungry.
Or if you're doing interval workouts, you don't have any water during your breaks.
Of course in races you can fuel yourself to run super fast.
