She finished second. I would say this would be true if she won.

Rupp will never change his current tactic motifs.

0/10
Everyone tries to win races... what makes think they run to lose? Speculation, maybe?
Reading comprehension fail. I said, I suspect she tries to win races, yet you read - what makes you think they run to lose?
Retard.

Winning is greatly overrated, especially when at the expense of running one's best.

The most important statistical number when racing is place.
Winning is greatly overrated? I hope you don't coach.
Not that hard to race gutsy when you're super fit. If I were in 12:50 shape for 5000 I could show you all some gutsy racing too.
well damn

You sound like an assistant football coach.
I was around to see Prefontaine in his heyday; I may have been born in the same year he was which means yes, I am quite old.
I don't understand the continuing fixation with him on here, and why contemporary athletes have to be compared to him, for better or for worse.
Seriously, 40 years later, and with all of people who've run brilliantly in-between, what's up with this?

Unfortunately, it appears Coburn even had more race in her at the beginning than the pacemaker was allowing. Consequently, the pace maker was disruptive to her race. Terrible.
My question is who gets to set the pacemaker time and why can't there be 2 ?
Emma is the only one that uses them.
That is totally not true.American's almost never run to win in DL races. You really think Centro went in to win against Rudisha? You're too deluded. If you wasn't, we would see more American's running at the front EVERY race. That doesn't happen much now does it pumpkin, even amongst our best.

aaaaand of course someone has to be the first to bash on coburn's record. 9 11 is by no means soft. if there was a worlds/olympics this year coburn would most certainly medal. what makes this all the more spectacular is the way she did it. she didn't hide behind a pacer/front runner the entire race and take it at the end. she did a good portion of the work and earned it
How is 9:11 soft?! And run under 9 minutes?! Only one woman in history has done that.
Awesome race! Conburn made a great move over the last barrier before the water jump. I think she should have kicked harder going into the water jump and hurdled it. That might have given her enough of a lead to hang on for the win in the last 50m.
Races like this are the best ones to watch. In it to win it!
Icing is overrated, unless its Olympic gold, silver or bronze. just enjoy the cake. As fan that race was a tripple chocolate layer cake of World class Steeplechasing. Kudos to Coburn for getting the American Record.

It is a good question. The pacemaker only ran 1/3 of the race, and the TV coverage cut away to the pole vault, so we didn't get to see all of that first 1000m. But based on what is seen at the beginning of the race, Emma is right on the pacemaker, not always hugging the rail, and Emma appears to get over the hurdles better than the pacemaker, and consequently, appears to be slowed down (or at least you wonder if she could go faster). In the post-race interview with LRC, Coburn indicated she was getting some windbreak from the pacemaker. Two pacemakers might help extend pacemaking beyond 1000m, but two pacemakers in a steeple race might be even more disruptive to a competitor on the heels of the pacer(s) (if they are not running ahead fast enough), due to differences in speed they clear the hurdles.

She ran great but why use it to vaguely criticize our men, 1. Lots of American men race. Jager went for it in a steeple. Rupp beat Tanui in the 10000 and finished top 3-4 in DL 5000. I wish some would race more.2. Not sure what this means, Following the rabbit lead to her DL win in Shanghai. She is not afraid to be the one that goes with the rabbits.3. Again, Rupp and Jager try to win. Rupp was leading the last lap of a DL race.

100%.
1) She is not afraid to race.
2) She does not let a rabbit determine her destiny.
3) Today she ran like she really thought she could win.
The camera angle was tremendous for this race. It was a side shot the entire final 200m. Made it even more exciting.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
