What is the proper tempo pace for a 5:46 miler (track)?
Daniel's say 6:47, McMillan is in the same range, but I ran at that pace and even down to 6:27 for 5 minutes on a treadmill and didn't even hit 83% max heart rate at the end. The total run was 50 minutes, starting at 8:30 pace. Progressed slowly to 6:50 pace over the first 20 minutes, about 25 minutes between 6:50 and 6:40, and 5 minutes at 6:27
Is the treadmill that much easier or am I doing something wrong? I felt like I could run the 6:27 for at least 30 minutes without hurting much. That would be better than my 5k PR (20:11 - road) for 50% longer.
I do run at 0% grade when on the treadmill, because of the studies showing wind resistance is negligible unless you're hitting >10mph. I typically find treadmill running harder (with higher heart rate at a given pace), I think because of the lack of air movement/heat build up.
My mile is better than ever (yes i know, slow) and I think the tempo runs are what I need to really improve on my 5k & 10k times and I want to do them effectively.
