2011: Ran a 4:03 mile on 60mpw, sidelined 3 months with a stress reaction.
2012: Tore my hamstring just before the season started, ran a painful 4:07 mile and called it quits. Training partner ran in the 13:30s for 5k :-(
2013: Did not compete. Busy with grad school.
2014: Ran 100mpw for 8 months straight and was absolutely killing it. (I could tempo an 8k in 24:30 despite my previous PR being 25:30). Started adding lots of speedwork and promptly injured my hamstring again.
I want to get back to 100mpw again but don't want to injure my hamstring with speedwork. Running uphill has never caused me any problems, but I feel like the slower turnover doesn't contribute to the speed endurance needed for a sub 1:50 or sub 4:00 mile.
Does anyone know the best way to build speed from now until the next track season without killing my hamstrings again? Are hills an acceptable substitute for fast strides?
