I've been seeing a lot of mixed opinions about this and I want to know because I got offered a track scholarship this year at my college, but in order to receive all the money, I am going to need to run cross country in the fall. Now my coach said he realizes I sprint, so he won't have me do anything like 8-10 miles a day or any of these like 70 minute runs or whatever because I'm not a distance athlete. That I probably won't exceed much more than four miles every few days and he would have me do pre-season track event specific workouts during cross country.
I am more of a 200/400 guy. Best times in my events are 6.92 in the 55 F.A.T., 7.29 in the 60 F.A.T., 11.24 in the 100 (converted from 10.94 handtime) and 11.40 F.A.T., 22.44 in the 200 (converted from 22.1 handtime), 37.79 in the 300, and 22.99 F.A.T., and a 51.77 in the 400 F.A.T.
I had a friend in high school (also a 200/400 guy), a year younger than me, run cross country this past year (his senior year) and he wasn't horrible at it but come track season, he went from a 51.67 down to a 50.96, from a 22.71 to a 22.59, in the 300 from a 36.90 to a 36.45 (which he would've probably ran a sub 36 if he wouldn't have pulled his hamstring during the race at states), and in the 55 went from a 6.77 to a 6.64. The ONLY race he got slower in was the 100 went from 11.19 last year to an 11.40 this year but I believe that is from him pulling his hamstring. So he made not tremendous improvement, but noticeable improvement and he tells me XC helped him with it because it made him a stronger runner. And he didn't even do speed work during his XC season. The only power stuff he did relating to speed was weight lifting because he had it as a class.
I also had a coach I know tell me that the first man to break 44 seconds in the 400, Lee Evans, added XC training to his workouts and said Lee Evans swore that adding this type of training helped him break the 44 second barrier and win the 400M dash at the 1968 Olympics.
So would running XC help me in anyway for track, based on being a 200/400 and my coach being smart about it and not making me do any ridiculous distance training?
