Wrong! NFL, NBA and NCAA football and men's basketball all have television timeouts.

Commercials come during change of possessions, timeouts and halftime.
(Maybe the change of possession breaks are extended a little for commercials)
NBA basketball actually has TV timeouts scheduled in.
that is not entirely true. the commercials after a kickoff (after a score and commercials) are entirely commercial breaks for commercial reasons.
nba and college both have commercial timeouts.
Let me highlight again what I wrote for NFL games:
(Maybe the change of possession breaks are extended a little for commercials)
But there is an inherent stoppage of play in football where there is a wholesale change of players that get on the field.
Soccer keeps the clock going.
Basketball and hockey could do this but it's just not set up that way.
The whole point is, soccer has it's way of playing and TV coverage has to adjust for it if they want to broadcast all of the action.
They choose not to broadcast distance races in their entirety.
These are all business decisions.
Because there might be only 1 or 2 goals in a match and a commercial at the wrong time misses. What happens during the 3nd and 4th lap of a 3000 meter is pretty much what happened on the 2nd and 5th laps, so no real reason to not go to commercial.
This is so obvious that everyone commenting on this thread is a colossal idiot.

Not true. Usually the coverage will show the first 500m before cutting to coverage of a high jumper rocking back and forth as they mentally visualize their attempt. After 50 seconds of this, the athlete springs into action but ohh they just clip the bar with their heel. The jumper leaps up and waves enthusiastically to the crowd who are not reacting at all. They are shown leaving the mat adjusting the uniform. The announcers struggle to make sense of it all before rejoining the race with 700 meters left.
Now I have heard that to watch soccer you have to pay for your teams subscription so that the media is paid from viewers rather than from commercials. I do not know how reliable the source is (especially since I don't remember who told me), but some internet sleuthing might be able to confirm or deny the rumour if you are interested.
Man, I'll be honest. I grew up in a running family, love running, ran in HS and D1 college. I was captain of my college team and was All America in XC my junior year. I wasn't great, but I had some really good races. I really love running.
Even I would rather watch soccer on TV. I just don't really like watching running on TV. I don't know. I mean, we can justify and criticize all we want, but some things are just more fun to watch. I think soccer is a great spectator sport.

Points taken, however, the breaks in American football are made unnecessarily long to accommodate more commercials per game break, and commercial breaks are getting crammed into more and more game-related breaks. All of this adds up to games that last 3+ hours. It's happening at the collegiate level as well, and spilling over into collegiate hockey. Have you ever been to an NFL game? It's ridiculous. The absolute worst is March Madness basketball. TV breaks around every 2 minutes until roughly 4 minutes left in the half, where there's only 1 scheduled because each team has 4 timeouts (formerly 5 timeouts). That TOTALLY affects the outcome of games when you consider the importance of momentum, wearing the opponent down with pressure, and foul trouble. Football (soccer) is the best gig right now. Short of overtime, 2 hours and you're done. It's great.
Man, I like football and I cannot even stand to watch an NFL game live due to the commercial breaks. It is awful. And on one TV I have Apple TV and it just plays the same two commercials over and over and over and over during the commercial breaks. I literally cannot do it, so I DVR games and end up only watching the 2nd half (usually fast fwd through first half).
I like watching Premiere League soccer games. You get into a Half and there is no extended stop in play. 1:30 is ideal for a sports match/game. The 4-Hour NFL slogs are terrible.

This is the real reason it's still not the number one sport in america.
The secondary reason is the player salary competition from other leagues makes it difficult to hold down salaries so the owners can make some money. They can't just make an arbitrary salary cap like other american sport since the MLS players association isn't the only group they need to negotiate with.
What? The reason that MLS isn't more popular is that millions of American soccer fans prefer to watch Mexican, European, and South American soccer because all MLS teams are owned by the same entity, there is no true competition, mediocrity is allowed to exist unpunished, and the national federation supports MLS exclusively and does not incentivize player development while they are granted exemptions from key requirements of FIFA member nations.

Who wants to watch guys jog for the whole time. Action could happen at any point in a soccer game, a 3000 won't see anything until the ending
They should just put a company's logo in miniature on some part of the screen. Also,
USE A SPLIT SCREEN INSTEAD OF CUTTING AWAY FROM THE RACE TO GO TO THE HIGH JUMP
JUST TELL ME WHO FALSE STARTED, I DO NOT NEED TO SEE IT OR HEAR SOMEONE'S BACKSTORY TO FULFILL MY FANTASY THAT THIS IS BEING BROADCAST LIVE
If you're even going to show the women's events, show them all in a row. Show the men's events all in a row.
Always amazed that so many Americans still don't realize that futbol is the world's sport.
Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep their husbands busy.
