My thought as well. I can't simply leave work to run a marathon any time I want. My employer is much more lenient about time off than others in my industry, but if I have a closing scheduled the week after the Boston Marathon, I am not running the Boston Marathon.

He didn't leave his job, it was his personal time on a holiday weekend.
