Hi.
I was a very successful (state placer at 215 lbs in the early 2000s) high school wrestler in California.
After college, .mil service (in a support rate), and a graduate degree I was very out of shape.
I took up running in 2010 because I was disgusted at what I had become.
I ran my first marathon in 2011 at 220 lbs - 3:49. Then I went on a tear, lost a bunch of weight, and 5 months later ran a 3:08, at 180 lbs
Since then I've had 1 ankle surgery (due to an old wrestling injury) and had some great training. I've run workouts I'd never have thought possible. Yet the best marathon finish I've had since is 3:11. And my half PR is 1:27.
Tonight at practice I did mile repeats at 5:20/mi. I know people who have cruised to sub-3 marathons who can't hang with me at my running club's workouts or come anywhere near breaking 5:20 for a RACE EFFORT mile. I am confused because according to various running calculators a far from max-effort 5:20 should have me at 2:55 or thereabouts.
My question is - are my sub-par marathon performances due to undeveloped systems (anaerobic, aerobic, etc) or and I just too big to ever break 3? I am 6'1" ~185 at the moment. I put some weight back on after quitting smokeless tobacco.
I'd like to break 18:00 for the 5K, 1:25 for the half and 3 hours for the marathon.
So I guess my questions are -
(1) Am I simply underdeveloped? Should I be more patient while I develop my heart and lungs?
(2) what are reasonable goals for the distances I listed?
(3) should I accept the fact that I am too big to ever hope of achieving the objectives listed above?
