I have two glasses of wine a night. I'm older, in my 50's. My metabolism has slowed (so have I), but within a 11-18 week period went from 155 to 165 when injured. I did lift alot, and did build up my upper body slightly. Now, gradually getting back to normal routine, and can NOT seem to lose weight, even a little. I am gradually getting back to 1 track workout a week, and 1 road workout per week, with running 5-7 miles per day, and typically running 6 days a week.
I do eat rather smart. Not like a bird, but do not eat fast foods, and try to eat fish and protein often, and have cut back on carbs, sweets and even drinking. I usually stop at two or three beers if we go out. And, that only happens about once every other week. My drink intake is about 10-15 glasses of wine per week, or 7-9 glasses of wine per week and about 5-7 bottles of beer per week.I try to convince myself that I should be satisfied. Then, I look in the mirror and I'm not happy with my slight bulge around my waist Do you think that just cutting the drinking will be the difference? I could do that, but again, at this age...I'd seem like I'm over-doing it and make my non-running friends shake their heads hearing my reasons for not drinking (since many of them are slightly overweight and don't really exercise that much)
Seems sort of ridiculous at this age to worry, since I'm no longer really competitive in my mind. I reached my goals. Ran under 16 min until 41 and under 17 min until 52. Now, the decrease in performance has taken a much steeper decline in a seemingly much shorter span of time. And, my gut is larger (32) than the normal 30. I can withstand the reply insults, but am really looking for some real advice. I feel it's all relative. By that, I mean, if you were a 22 min 5k guy and within a short period you became a 25 min 5k guy, you'd be concerned, right?
I do plan to cut the drinking for a while. But, does anyone know how long in days or weeks, it takes to make a difference?
I also would like to give it "one more shot" at being able to run what would be considered a good or respectable time.
My overall thought is to try to get in more track workouts, and not have to go over 45 mpw, since my age has become a factor in mileage rather than recovery from workouts.
Any others here have similar issues, or any advice for me?
