A friend of mine ran 3:16 for his first ever marathon this weekend. The problem though is he split 1:24 for his first 13.1 and 1:52 for his last half.
He ran a 1:16 half marathon PR a month ago and has only been running for 3 years.
What do you think he could have run with better pacing? 3:05 maybe?
Is this a joke? If he ran 1:16, 1:24 should be pretty close to his marathon pace. 1:52 means he crashed and burned HARD. Maybe he just had a bad day. If not, then it's really hard to predict because his biggest problem is lack of mileage, not bad pacing. Unless of course his first 10k was run in 34 minutes or something, in which case yeah pacing was a problem.
Tell him to actually do some long runs and a couple of long tempo runs in the weeks leading up to his next marathon and he's got a good shot at breaking 2:50.
