About 3 months ago I started running again after not training for 2+ years. Things are progressing and I am doing probably between 30-40 miles a week, mostly in slow mileage. I want to start doing some more consistent quality workouts, and the question is this: Up till now, there has always been something I have been attempting to peak for (HS, College seasons and specific races) but now that I am out of that scene, how should me training periodization look? At the moment, I am just wanting to put up some decent 5k/10k road race results through the rest of the year, and then once my fitness is back to it was pre-break, start building up for a marathon.
If I recall, Jack Daniels talks about your body only being able to take and benefit from a relatively short period of intense I type interval training. So if I focused on Threshold training, and hills/R type stuff to help me get some speed/economy back, and then after a month or two of that, started throwing in a solid set of 1k repeats like every two weeks, would I be able to maintain that throughout the rest of the year and steadily improve my fitness?
