Apparently the OP knew, I guess.
But by "Everyone Knew" he means a tiny fraction of the population knew.
And now all of the country knows.

Sterling was known to be a slum lord, racist and has had very well documented lawsuits. The league knew he was a racist. Doc Rivers knew he was a racist. The players knew he was a racist. The sponsers who are now pulling ads knew he was a racist. The guy gets coerced into saying some racist remarks and it goes viral so NOW we have to do something about Donald Sterling?
I had the same question initially but then was reminded of a conversation I had with David Epstein once about PED investigations.
Basically, SI exposed Lance Armstrong to be a cheat long before he was banned. Even when WADA banned him initially, people still didn't react.
As Epstein says, you almost need a smoking gun, video evidence, a positive test or people will simply take your denials.
So even though tons of ex teammates had said lance was a doper. He wasn't a doper until much later in most people's minds. Even when he was banned, some still believed his crap about "Not fighting it anymore." It was only when Nike dropped him.
Here, Steling could pay fines for being racist but deny it until the tape surfaced.

+1
Because Stern is no longer commissioner, and Stern knew better than to fk with Sterling because he knows that Sterling is out of his league when it comes to litigation, and would have sued the league blind, just like he is going to do know.

Well Donald Sterling got what he deserved. But it is indeed a slippery slope. What happens if Mark Cuban goes out drinking and someone secretly records him saying a few bad things about gays or hispanics? Or if Michael Jordan says a few bad things about Asians? Will their franchises be taken away too?
And this weekend Shaq mocked and ridiculed a handicapped man on his Instagram. Should Shaq be relieved from his TNT duties? Spike Lee visited South Africa and when he returned he said he wanted to kill some Whiteys. Should he be banned too?
The NBA will deal with each situation as it comes. Remember the NBA is 75% african american. The NBA is less than 1% gay, asian and hispanic lumped together. Reactions will be different. Not saying that is right, just how things are.
Your last two examples are not relevant to this situation.
If only had Donald Sterling would have raped her and beat her within an inch of her life we wouldn't be having this conversation. Instead he was badgered and poked with a stick before he said "black man". Take away that man's team.
Floyd Mayweather reportedly has interest in buying the Clippers. If it happens, all problems will be solved!

Money. Lots of money. New ownership. New boon for the league. The racism thing is just a shiny object.

Not disagreeing, just don't understand this idea. How does the league benefit from ownership of a team changing hands? Does the league get a cut of the selling price?
The incarceration rate of black males was over 6 times higher than that of white males.

Racism is often "truism".
You're stupid

Dennis- The examples are very relevant.
Shaquille and Spike are owners of an NBA team? Since when?
Not relevant at all.

the current kerfuffle is about protecting the NBA brand. Getting Sterling to sell the Clippers will just be a fig leaf on the problem.
