Stone Cutter- Thanks for starting the Boston thread in addition to this one, and I'll address some of your comments in that thread over the next day or two. As for your training, I think you have set some very appropriate goals for Broad Street as the pace you described (6-6:10) is somewhat close to your HM pace from last fall, and the implication seems to be that you'll be kind of running at that pace for an unspecified distance at this point. This is actually pretty smart as it takes away the pressure a little bit and sounds like just what you need at this point in your buildup.
Printer- Can't say thank you enough for the support you have shown the Boston crew over the past few months and especially this weekend. It put a damper on the weekend not seeing you out there, but next year we'll be cheering for you, whether we're out there with you or at home.
NP- Uh, feel a little weird commenting on you as we have pretty much talked about each other's training/races for the past 72 hours. Congrats again on the PR and it seems like you got the taper right as well as executed you race plan perfectly.
Slartzio- Damn dude you are really on a roll lately. The Sunday run looks interesting, is that basically alternating 1 miles easy with 1 miles at MP? Seems like a decent way to build some strength without doing the damage of a straight MP run.
VF Runner- Hey, it's all about taking small steps forward and looking at the positive gains you made. In this case it's the ability to get out there all 7 days and get something in even when you don't really feel like you "had it". I think you still got in the effort on Thursday, no need to let the fact that conditions were suboptimal get you down.
Forcerunner- Congrats on the sub15 man! Although for all of us following your training over the past few months we all knew it was just a matter of time. Didn't seem like you backed off much for this one either. Sub-14:40 in a month?
Ghola- congrats on the PR as well! And you did it by hanging on after a faster than planned first mile so that's gotta be worth something as well. Your workouts are going really well too, so I think as long as you get decent conditions for the twilight meet you should be looking pretty good for sub-15.
Xenonscreams- Hey, it's tough to get in what you thought would be a super competitive race and end up in the situation you did. (i.e stuck behind clueless joggers). I think you made the best of it and got a solid session out of the morning. It sounds like you enjoyed the rest of your vacation in Boston as well, hopefully watching the race inspired you to be a participant in the near future?
KBXC- Training is looking good kid. I am going to throw an idea out there and you can talk it over with your coach and see what he thinks, but it sounds like you haven't had a race effort at your goal distance (mile) for awhile, so you might want to do a time trial about a week out either solo or with a teammate. The two options for the time trial i would suggest is either run a mile at about 5-10s slower than your goal as a rust buster, or run a 1000-1200 at your goal pace mile. I remember it always took me 1-2 efforts like those before I can really run a mile race that was indicative of my fitness level. Again, he might have something else planned for you that might suit you better, but just an idea.
Bonham- Sorry to hear man, but I guess the good news is that you can at least cross train and maintain/preserve your fitness level somewhat. I feel like elliptical workouts are a good way to strength your legs as well, so that may pay off once you are healthy and ready to roll again.
Reed- Nice effort. One thing I have always heard (and agree with) is that it's really the 2nd mile of the race that's the key. If you can maintain contact with a group or competitor during that mile when you are hurting you can usually rally and do whatever you need to do once you get to that last mile. This may be even more true in your case as it seems like you are a pretty decent closer as well.
slowpoke rodriguez- Damn man, you are getting back into shape insanely quickly. Good luck this weekend!
Bajada Master- Nice week of consistent running, keep up the good work.
King hobbyjogger- That's not THAT low of a week, and the rest can help you come back even stronger for the next phase of your training. Keep plugging away man.
Kierran- It's normal to have a couple of down sessions during a training cycle, in fact, to have as few as you have had during your entire cycle so far is pretty amazing. I would keep on doing what you have been doing and you should be right back on track this week or next.
Swift23r- Solid week as usual. I'll hit you up soon when I am recovered in a couple of weeks and ready to knock out some tempos and we can time it with one of your moderate days haha.
CMM268- That's an interesting taper week, since in the past I thought I have seen you do more of a standard Daniels taper (with threshold intervals), but I could be wrong. I have been thinking about doing that lately, but really I don't think it makes much of a difference in the last few days. (FWIW, I usually do a 3 miles MP run 3-4 days out, and this time I did 2@MP, 1@MP-10s/mi, 1@T)
Looking forward to the race report and I'll comment after you post it, but it was great to finally meet you even if it was only a couple of minutes. Sorry the postrace hangout thing didn't work out as NP and I were staying so far away from downtown and by the time we finally made it back there we had very little motivation to go back downtown again. Maybe next time!
