Today I was scheduled to do a workout (5 X 800m). My training has been going well, but today I just wasn't into it. I was tired and had a stressful day at work, plus my legs felt stale and sore. I did 2 (more like 1.5) reps and was off the goal pace and fading, so I decided to postpone my workout until tomorrow and just run the rest easy today.
Should I have decided this before the run? Maybe. I feel bad because I "quit" the workout, but probably would have felt worse if I continued to run poorly.
Where do you draw the line between what you count as a workout and what you count as an easy run? If I would have run 3 or 4 reps at a slower than goal, but faster than easy pace, would you count that as a workout or try again the next day? I know I won't count two 800s as a workout.
