I am finishing up my freshman year of high school and am considering doing something similar to what george oscar bluth did around that time. I have always had problems with heelstriking and while it has gotten better with time, my form is still not very good, and I think running in flats/minimalist shoes could improve my stride when I get into the spikes and race.
I currently run in Nike Structure 17s, which have a large heel pad and a fairly thin sole around the forefoot (a lot of heel "drop"). When I run in the Structures, I heelstrike quite a bit, even though my foot appears to be pretty level in relation to the ground. When I wear spikes or run barefoot, I land midfoot or forefoot (depending on pace and surface) and start to heelstrike a little when I get very tired, i.e. the end of a race.
Because my form is still kinda questionable, I'm thinking of using flats for tempos/hills/intervals and sticking with the Structures for easy runs. If my form shows noticeable improvement after a few weeks of that, I would consider doing some longer and slower runs in flats.
Any recommendations for entry-level flats I could use for something like this? The main thing I'm looking for is a higher heel with less drop.
