family guy has constant dialogue that references previous events. THe scene then goes to the previous event then everyone laughs. It gets old and formulaic. South Park has darker undertones and really makes interesting commentary on society through their plots. South Park Wins.

You're just anti-Manatee. Hater!
South Park by a mile.
Family Guy has it's moments, but it tries way too hard. I swear they even rip off Simpson gags here and there. If you can get past the over the top humor, South Park has a dry wit Family Guy can only dream of competing with.
Family Guy wins by a mile.
South Park is just sophomoric humor whereas Family Guy is filled with brilliant stuff (not all of it is, but a good portion is).
Chef was the best thing on South Park.
In order of greatness:
The Simpsons
Family Guy
King of the Hill
Bob's Burgers
...way down the list now
Punky Brewster
South Park
Cop Rock
As per usual, Flagpole argues with "elitist" humor that doesn't even apply here.
Both shows are lacking nowadays. Family guy was at its best before it was initially canceled and around 2007. Nowadays it tries too hard to take a stance on debatable issues and tries to deepen its characters. It's comes off as corny.
South Park does this to an extent but doesn't try as a hard. But I must say, the first few South Park seasons were amazing.

What has family guy ever done that has pushed the boundaries of what's acceptable on tv? How has it done anything other than make the same joke setup 50x in the same episode?

Flagpole is WAY off here. South Park has brilliant social commentary. Family Guy is extremely dumbed down and formulaic. Seriously South Park might be one of the best satires of all time. Family Guy is a bunch of gay baby jokes. South Park has fallen off in recent seasons, but so as family guy.
I have no idea how you can have this opinion, since you seem to be usually well-informed. I must assume that you have not watched much South Park (or Family Guy for that matter).
This is not debatable and most analyst and critics would agree.

Dude, stick with finance.
The Simpson WAS great the first several seasons. It's been unwatchable for 15 years.
Bob's Burger, really, you're going with that over South Park?
Damn I realize now that Flagpole was just trolling. Damn he's so good. Been an honor to be trolled by the King.

Yes, South Park is sophomoric while Family Guy is brilliant. Oh, by the way:
Season 8, Episode 11; Dial Meg For Murder: A "Breeding Bull" rapes and sexually harasses Peter Griffin.
Season 4, Episode 14; PTV: In a cutaway to the end scene from "Sixteen Candles," it's implied that Jake Ryan rapes Peter Griffin.
Season 4, Episode 25; You May Now Kiss the...Uh...Guy Who Receives: In a reference to Elizabeth Smart (kidnapped in 2002), an interview with her parents makes the joke that she now plays the harp and writes songs "mostly about rape."
Season 6, Episode 2; Movin' Out (Brian's Song): Quagmire rapes Marge Simpson in a fake ad for "The Simpsons" at the bottom of the screen.
Season 7, Episode 4; Baby Not on Board: In a cutaway scene, a girl is being raped on the beach while Aquaman watches, helpless, from the sea:
Stewie: You damn fool! You're more useless than Aquaman!
[Cut to a beach, where a crying woman desperately running, trips over, and a rapist tackles and pins her to the ground]
Desperate Woman: Help! Somebody help, rape!
Rapist: Scream all you want, nobody can hear you out here.
[Aquaman pops up from the ocean in the background, his voice sounding distant]
Aquaman: I can!
Desperate Woman: Aquaman, help!
Aquaman: Hey!...Hey-hey! Let her go!
Rapist: Or what??
Aquaman: Or...or..I don't know man, but you're...you're lucky you're not doing that over here! In the ocean! Or else, or-I would stop you!
Desperate Woman: For Godsakes help! Do something! [Aquaman picks up a starfish and throws it towards them. It lands harmlessly next to them]
Aquaman: Aw, if you don't like starfish you're gonna be mad about what I just did!
Desperate Woman: Oh God he-he-help!
Aquaman: Aw you're in for it now buddy, I got like five fish coming to help! [several fish playfully jump in and out of the water around him] Oh! Oh! Here they are!
Desperate Woman: Help, he's hurting me!
Aquaman: Well, maybe you shouldn't have led him on.
Season 8, Episode 21; Partial Terms of Endearment: This dialogue comes into play when discussing when abortion is "ok."
Brian: What if it's rape?
Peter: Well perhaps she should have thought of that before she asked me for directions.
Brian: What?
Season 2, Episode 21; Fore Father: Quagmire attempts to sexually assault a woman and is immune to the mace she uses on him (implying that he is a serial rapist).
Season 4, Episode 7; Brian the Bachelor: Quagmire drugs and attempts to drag character Brooke's body off the set when he realizes he's being filmed and stops.
Season 3, Episode 19; Stuck Together, Torn Apart: A waiter at a bar asks Quagmire if he wants his usual drink with a roofie for his date.
Season 9, Episode 5; Baby, You Knock Me Out: After Lois defeats a competitor boxer, Quagmire is seen dragging her unconscious body away.
Flapole, I didn't realize you endorsed rape and rape jokes. Congrats.

1) Who says a show has to push boundaries of what's acceptable to be funny or good?
2) South Park is the one that does the same thing over and over. Oh no...they killed Kenny. Yawn.

I didn't say I liked EVERYTHING about Family Guy. Overall it is MUCH funnier (and smarter) than South Park.
My experience tells me:
8th grade boys prefer South Park (I have an 8th grade son)
Adults prefer Family Guy

Brother, Family Guy is also sophomoric and it propagates rape culture. Independent of this "which is better" argument, Family Guy is a terrible show for that sole reason. Your endorsement of it here indicates that you have no concern for rape culture. Terrible.
1. South Park is much, much better.
2. "Family Guy" is nothing but gag humor -- there's nothing remotely clever about it. Randomness doesn't necessarily = funny. "South Park" has plenty of "random" moments that are hilarious, but they flow with the plots and themes of the show. When they do their randomness, the writers seem to have earned it, and the payoff is often hilarious.
3. If you like Family Guy, I suspect you might still find The Simpsons funny, which was truly unwatchable past season 9. Did you like "The Simpsons Movie"? If yes, that's all we need to know.
South Park wins, big time.
Killing Kenny hasn't been a running gag since like....12 years ago....

It shows that they're at least trying to think of things other than doing the same old joke over and over again. It's one thing to have a running gag in your show, and it's completely another to have the entire show be running gags
