I always used the small key pocket found in most shorts.
I also have taped to shoulder blades with athletic tape. They are really light and you don't notice them.

i usually stuff 2 in the key pocket and will safety pin another 3 to my waistband. i've found that if i position them in the front of my shorts, just inside the inguinal crease, they don't bounce or chafe and are easy to get to.
of course you could always see if the marathon offers gels on course and just grab those gels as you run by.
Brooks shorts have their "holster pockets" on the sides. 2 GUs fit in each. Tie the drawstring tight though as 4 GUs is a bit of weight. They have little velcro in there to keep the pockets loosely closed.
I also cut up an old pair or shorts and sewed in pockets to the sides. These work great too.
Ive run plenty of marathons in my Brooks and they work great. The whole PIN idea was always a bit difficult to get them off plus they bounced around.
FYI: I've done 5 marathons sub 2:50 in these brooks shorts with 4 GUs total. Im not saying I am fast, just that they work.

Shoulder blades? I'm confused. How did you reach them?
Loads of advice and ideas. Thanks. Some a bit weird...especially the shoulder blade one, can't see how that would work personally! And as for bum bags....
Still struggling as to what to try, think I better reassess what energy gel to try and use, no way could I fit even 1 in the key pocket of my racing shorts let alone 2 or more like some have said.
Never even thought about this issue before thinking of the marathon. Any more suggestions?
I've knocked out a few half-marathons pushing my Bob Ironman Stroller. There is a tone of room in there to bring whatever you want - bottle of gatoraide, snacks, breast milk, set of speakers hooked to your IPOD, car keys, cellphone, your first born, fruit squeezers (plastics things filled with baby food), blankets, etc.

I'm running my first marathon in a couple of months, looking to run 2.25 and have been wondering where you sub-elite runners keep your energy gels during the race? I run in racing shorts so they don't have pockets and don't particularly want to hold them until I use them, but is this the only option? What do others do? Thanks
With that modest goal time I assume you're a girl. So just use your natural pocket.
Jorts have all kinds of pockets for those gels.
I'll probably wear mine when I do a 50k next month.
So have you considered maybe just using the Gatorade and gu that most marathons offer, not sure which one you are doing but you should be getting some bottle service or something at 2:25, use a thick rubber band or two for your 15k and your half and maybe your 20 mile bottles. Put two Gus on the water bottle and toss the one with the bottle out or give to someone around you fading. I would practice when you want to take in the calories. At that pace two should be plenty if you are taking in water and Gatorade every other aid station or so.
Shorts w mess pockets along the back. Works great.
Cooler weather - I slip them inside my gloves on the backside of my hand
Warmer weather - I safety pin them on the inside of my waist band

These shorts work fine for me. I have had 1 slip out once or twice, I pin a spare or 2 to the front waistband close to the center.
Pin them on the inside of your baseball cap.

Approximately half the world population at least has reason to consider wearing underwear with running shorts. Ever heard of testicular torsion?
Ever hear of an inner lining which is all proper running shorts
If you are sub 2:30 you don't need to gel..... so best stash up as you sound like a 3+ runner
If your shorts don't have pockets, you can always carry them in your hand.
