I think that statistic is more a reflection of how poorly we as Americans are at managing our money. 90% (making that number up) have smart phones and expensive data plans, 1000 channels on TV, frequently dine out, enjoy fine craft beers, but half of us have less than 3 months in saving? Sounds about right.
The number is a little skewed, too, as it most likely doesn't include investments. It could be that someone has $30K in his 401(k), but only $3K in savings and is counted as one who doesn't have 3 months worth of savings.
