Possibly less fast than he did. Would have earned some big early money, then retired.
7.28, 12.55, 26.55.
Rono's splits at the dual meet in Berkely in 1978 when he nearly lapped the field (I think 10k WR holder Kimombwa was 2nd in the 13:50s)
WR Berkeley (all splits 400 meters)
1:07 (67)
2:10 (63)
3:14 (64)
4:15 (61) 1600m
5:18 (63)
6:20 (62)
7:24 (64)
8:28 (64) 3200m
9:31 (63)
10:35 (64)
11:38 (63)
12:09 (31) 4600m
13:08 (59.4)
At night, with pacers and/or competition, and off the sauce. There was no ceiling with Rono.
Perhaps the greatest runner of the 20th Century not to have run in an Olympics.

i agree, rono was in a different league than everybody else.
you have to read rod dixon's account of his races and "training" ....
like 48 hours of binge drinking then wake up from a coma and run 12 x 400m in 60 seconds or less vomiting between each.... then get nearly lapped in the next race and wake up - and make up the lap and win.....
or overtaking a triple jumper running parallel to the straightaway mid race.... or is that claim an urban myth?
i'm not so sure about rono's top end speed, but at 10k i would say he was capable of 26. flat = best of all time.
that is off the sauce, pacing, al-sal training...
give him PED's and maybe you'd see a 201 marathon.
I saw a race on TV where Rono hammered the straights and
eased up on the curves.
Probably he wouldn't have run very fast. Most modern coaches would have corrected Rono's anterior tilt so that he couldn't break 14.

Koech, Alimirew, Gebriwhet, Gebremeskel... no lack of talent. That's how fast Rono would run.
